PALM BAY, FLORIDA — Palm Bay Police announced that a 60-year-old man drowned Thursday afternoon after the kayak he was paddling flipped over in a deeper section of Turkey Creek.
Palm Bay Fire Rescue responded to the waterway after receiving reports that the vessel had capsized.
Firefighters, including the Palm Bay Police Department, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, launched a search for the man.
Officials say the man was with others at the time of the incident.
He went underwater after the kayak overturned and his body was later found by Palm Bay firefighters during a shallow water dive in the area.
It remains unclear whether the man was wearing a life vest when the accident occurred or if it became dislodged during the incident, officials said.
The investigation into what caused the kayak to capsize is ongoing.
