BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Julius Reid, a graduate of Cocoa High School and Florida Tech, has been selected as the boys basketball coach at Florida Preparatory Academy of Melbourne.

Florida Preparatory Academy, which was known as Florida Air Academy up until June 1, was founded by Jonathan Dwight, an educator and aviation enthusiast from New Jersey.

Reid was a leader on his high school team for the Cocoa Tigers in 2009 when they won the 4A Florida State High School Championship.

A civil engineering graduate from Florida Tech in 2014, Reid was also an assistant coach during the Panthers 2013-14 season. A four year starter for the Panthers, Reid was selected as an honorable mention on the NCAA Division II All-America basketball team.

“We plan to continue to advance the strong tradition of Florida Prep through working very hard in the classroom and on the court,” said Reid.

Florida Prep is one of the most highly rated schools of its kind in the region, offering both boarding and non-boarding positions, with an emphasis on academics with a diverse student body.

In the fall of 2005, the school began accepting female students in both boarding and day capacities. The girls made an excellent contribution to the school and raised the bar academically. There have been five female valedictorians since the school became co-ed.

In 2011 the Academy celebrated its 50th Anniversary year. In 2013, a one-to-one Apple iPad program was implemented as the cornerstone of its focus on 21st Century Learning.

In June, the Academy became Florida Preparatory Academy (Florida Prep) to more accurately reflect its college preparatory identity.
