SEBASTIAN INLET, FLORIDA – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported a series of unfortunate events took place when a towboat operator came to the aid of a pontoon boat stuck in the inlet near a bridge with four passengers onboard, ultimately leading to both boats colliding and capsizing.

All five people involved ended up in the water and in need of being rescued from the inlet’s strong current.

“Luckily, our officers along with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Indian River County Firefighter’s, park staff and helpful citizens were at the scene to rescue all involved with zero injuries,” said FWC officials.

“In one instance, a man was drifting to sea before FWC Lt. Lightsey acted quickly by jumping into the forceful current to rescue the man in the nick of time. Fortunately, the intense scene that unfolded before bystanders’ eyes had a happy ending.”
