GAME RECAP: Crimson Defeats Gray 29-17 in Annual Florida Tech Spring Game

ABOVE VIDEO: The Florida Tech Panthers held their spring football game on Saturday which the defense won 29-17. Space Coast Daily’s Alan Zlotorzynski spoke with head coach Steve Englehart, QB Trent Chmelik and two former Panthers and current NFL Draft hopefuls, Adonis Davis and Antwuan Haynes.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA (Florida Tech) – The Crimson team won Saturday’s annual Crimson & Gray Spring Football Game over the Gray team, 29-17, at Panther Stadium.

Similar to the previous two spring games, the scrimmage featured the matchup between the Crimson Defense and the Gray Offense. This year, the defense was spotted 29 points and it was up to the Gray team to beat the Crimson in 75 plays.

Unfortunately, the offense ran out of plays and the Crimson held on for their second victory in the last three years under this game format.

The Gray team racked up 370 yards of offense, with 239 of that coming on the ground on 39 carries. The team went 15-of-36 with 131 yards through the air.

Trent Chmelik got the start at quarterback for the Gray team and put in a few series of work. The junior finished 4-of-8 in the game with 42 passing yards and seven yards on the ground.

Nick Holm went 5-of-14 for 43 yards and Mike Diliello ended 5-of-10 with 27 yards passing and 25 yards rushing.

D.J. Hampton was the leading rusher in the game with 99 yards and a score on five carries. Matt Davis ran for 43 yards and a score on five carries, while John Padgett racked up 38 yards on eight attempts.

Brian Spurgeon, Jr. was the Gray’s biggest contributor through the air with 29 yards on three catches. Damien McGhee had 11 receiving yards on two catches while Derrick Wright had 10 yards on two receptions. Hampton caught one pass for 20 yards and Daniel Richardson took his one catch for 19 yards. Six other Panthers also had one catch in the game.

The Crimson defense was impressive in the game with two sacks, eight tackles for loss and five pass breakups.

Evan Thompson led the way with seven tackles, including six solo stops and one tackle for loss. K.J. Williams had five tackles, including one for loss. Chris Dascher picked up five tackles as well, while Titus Dixon finished with five stops, 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Rollansky Darote ended with four tackles and one pass breakup and Malachi Timberlake collected four tackles and a sack. Daniel Welch notched two pass breakups.

Trey Schaneville knocked in a 26-yard field goal, his only attempt of the contest, to open the scoring for the Gray. He also made both of his extra points in the game.

Later in the scrimmage, Matt Davis skirted off for a touchdown from 22-yards out to make the score 29-10, with still 31 plays to go.

Eleven plays later, newcomer D.J. Hampton blew by the Crimson defense and raced to a 35-yard touchdown to bring the Gray to within two touchdowns, 29-17, with 20 plays remaining.

Unfortunately, the offense was unable to cut into the deficit over the final plays and the Crimson went on to earn a 12-point victory.

Now that the 2019 spring season has concluded, the Florida Tech football team will turn its attention to the 2019 season opener against Savannah State on Saturday, Sep. 7, at Ted Wright Stadium in Savannah, Georgia.
