Crash Seriously Injures Motorcyclist In Melbourne

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA A late afternoon crash has left a Melbourne motorcyclist fighting for his life in the hospital.

Officer James O’Byrne of the Melbourne Police Department said rescue personnel were called to the scene of an accident between a vehicle and a motorcycle at Pebble Creek Drive and Wickham Road about 5:42 p.m. Tuesday.

There officers found the motorcyclist, Curtiss Stewart Hinkell of Melbourne, 68, had sustained serious injuries in a collision with a 2010 Honda Accord driven by Billy Gene Wells of Melbourne, 30..

He was airlifted to Holmes Regional Trauma Center by the First Flight helicopter.

Hinkell was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

O’Byrne said northbound lanes of Wickham Road were closed for four hours Tuesday night as the scene was investigated by traffic officers.

A preliminary investigation indicates Wells may have turned into the path of Hinkell’s motorcycle, O’Byrne said.

Hinkell remains hospitalized and is listed in critical condition.

Wells was not injured.
