Titans Suffer Another Heart-Breaking Defeat

BCC Falls to 2-18 Overall
MIAMI, FLORIDA – Playing perhaps their finest first-half of the season the Brevard Community College women appeared to be making a serious run at ending their 14-game losing streak and winning their first Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference contest of the season on Saturday.
BCC played host Miami Dade College to a 34-34 tie in the first 20 minutes and then built but blew a 12-point lead in the second half to suffer another defeat in what has been a backbreaker of a season, 77-69 in Kendall.
The Titans fell to 2-18 overall and 0-4 in conference. Miami Dade improved to 6-14 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
BCC led 65-53 with 5 minutes and 38 seconds to play but allowed Miami Dade to finish with a 24-4 run for the victory.
The run was keyed both by BCC’s failure to score from the floor or the free throw line and to rebound while Miami, which at one point late in the game was 9-for-24 from the free throw line, found the range.
Miami finished 16-for-34 from the line with the important makes at the end. BCC finished 20-for-29 but missed six when it counted in the final 1:49.
“We were up by 12 but we made stupid fouls,” BCC head coach Renee Bellamy said. “We have to be smarter. But they played hard. They’re getting better. The mental mistakes I can take to a certain extent because they continue to play hard. They came and competed.
“They showed they were capable of winning a basketball game,”she said. “That’s the positive part.”
Freshman Nuri Muhammad led BCC with 17 points. Freshman Tomoriya Hamm had 16 and sophomore co-captain Kasie Berry 15. It was the second straight game for BCC with sophomore co-captain and leading scorer Shaneece Stephens out of the lineup with a knee injury.
Freshmen Vernessa Hinnant and Channel Davis led Miami Dade with 18 points apiece.
Next up for BCC is a visit from conference-leading St. Petersburg College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Melbourne Campus gym.
St. Petersburg beat visiting BCC 75-32 in their first conference match up of the season on Jan. 9.
