BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech swimmers Bernie Murphy and Takashi Worrell have been selected Florida Tech’s Panther Student-Athletes of the Week for the period of Oct. 7-13.

The award comes after the men’s and women’s teams claimed their season-opening races last Saturday.
Murphy, a freshman from Melbourne Beach, Fla., won her first-ever race, the 200-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Her winning time in her individual event was 2:00.29.
She later teamed up with Liana Soileau, Jordan Caravona and Lauren Suarez to place first in their relay at 1:42.08.
Worrell, a junior transfer from Daytona State, was victorious in his opening race at FIT, the 1,000-yard freestyle. He also was the first swimmer to touch the timing pad in the 500-yard freestyle and earned second place in the 100-yard butterfly.
His time in the 1,000-yard freestyle was 9:45.39 and it was 4:42.67 in the 500-yard event. In the butterfly, he posted a mark of 53.38.
Both of the Panthers’ swimming teams earned their first victories over Saint Leo in the program’s three-year history on Saturday. The men won 131-74 and the women came out on top by a 109-96 score. The women also defeated Lynn in the race, 116-87.
FIT travels to Nova Southeastern on Friday for a 4 p.m. race at the NSU Aquatic Center.
