EFSC Hoops: Women Win, Men Streak Snapped

six-game winning streak snapped

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — Eastern Florida’s men’s basketball team saw a six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday in suffering its first Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference loss of the season, 73-72 at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce.

Eastern Florida led by as many as 18 points in the second half but allowed Indian River back into the game and in the final minutes Indian River out shot Eastern Florida 12-1 from the free-throw line.

Eastern Florida had a chance to win with .9 seconds remaining following two Indian River free throws but the officials waved off sophomore Mike Kirkland’s apparent winning basket saying time had expired.

Next up for Eastern Florida is a 7 p.m. Monday conference game against Palm Beach State at the Melbourne Campus gym. Admission is free.

EASTERN FLORIDA WOMEN TOP BROWARD 67-47

Eastern Florida’s women’s basketball team closed the first half with a 29-13 run and kept the pressure on en route to a 67-47 victory over Broward College on Saturday in the Melbourne Campus gym.

The victory moved Eastern Florida to 4-17 on the season, surpassing its win total of three from last season. Eastern Florida moved to 1-6 in the Florida College System Activities Association Southern Conference.

Broward fell to 2-16 and 1-6.

Doyle was supported by classmate Rachelle Aupont and sophomore Kendall Hedgecock who both finished with 16 points.

Aupont scored 14 points in the second half and Hedgecock 10 as the Titans won for the first time in nine games and the second time at home.

Aupont scored the Titans first seven points of the second half as they expanded a 36-23 halftime lead to 43-27.

“It feels great,” Aupont said. “(Head) Coach (Jim Grimes) has been talking about process and the wins coming. We’ve just got to keep up with the process. I’m really proud of our team.

“I want to go out with desperation every time,” Aupont added about her team-high 18 rebounds and hustle to loose balls. “If I can get my teammates second-chance opportunities, why not?”

Grimes echoed Aupont’s sentiments on the process.

“Mainly it feels good because our process was better today,” Grimes said. “We talked a lot about what would happen out here today. We had a good scouting report and it played out kind of like we thought and we made some plays we haven’t been making.”

Hedgecock also turned in a double-double with 11 rebounds. Doyle recorded five assists.

Next up for Eastern Florida State College is a conference game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Petersburg College. The Titans return home to face conference foe Indian River State at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.
