UPDATE: Fatal Crash Involves Semi Trucks, Multiple Vehicles, Northbound I-95 Shut Down

FHP UPDATE: The center and right lanes of southbound I-95 have re-opened. Northbound lanes will be shut down for an extended period of time, possibly until 5 p.m. Drivers need to use an alternate route for northbound I-95. Northbound is shut down at Mile Marker 176 at Palm Bay Road.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred when a semi-truck hauling an excavator (road construction equipment), on a trailer, was traveling southbound on I-95, had a tire tread separation.
The truck driver lost control of the semi and traveled through the guardrail. The excavator came off of the trailer and traveled into the northbound lanes of I-95 and struck a truck that was traveling northbound on I-95.
Two other vehicles that were traveling northbound were struck with debris, but neither driver was injured.
The driver of the semi-truck was transported to the hospital and the driver of the northbound truck was pronounced deceased on scene.
The northbound lanes have crash debris and diesel fuel on them. Once the debris is cleared, engineers will have to determine if the roadway has any damage that needs to be repaired.
FHP expects the northbound lanes to remains closed throughout the afternoon.
BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – I-95 is closed in both directions near mile marker 177 and exit 176 in Palm Bay due to a crash involving two semi trailers and multiple vehicles on Thursday morning.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at around 9:15 am.
At least one person has died, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
Officials advise drivers to avoid the area until further notice.
