BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA—The Melbourne Fire Department recently installed a new fire engine, which can carry all the equipment and personnel needed to provide help in a wide variety of emergencies.

The latest improvements include a custom Sutphen pumper engine at Station 71, 865 W. Eau Gallie Boulevard.

In 2024, Melbourne firefighters responded to an average of 50 calls for help a day. Continuous investment in reliable transportation that can get them to the people who need their help quickly and safely is of the utmost importance.

In addition to investments in its fleet, the Melbourne Fire Department is also preparing for future growth. Planning for the replacement of two existing fire stations and the construction of a new fire station near the Melbourne Orlando International Airport is underway.

The new stations will replace aging infrastructure and position the Fire Department to maintain its excellent response times as the City continues growing.

Introduction of New Fire Engine at Station 71

On April 1, 2025, MFD unveiled its latest addition: a state-of-the-art fire engine stationed at Station 71.

Division Chief Clark Simmons provided a comprehensive video tour, highlighting the engine’s capabilities.

This 2024 Sutphen custom pumper features a 1,500-gallon-per-minute pump and a 750-gallon water tank. It is designed to carry all necessary equipment and personnel for a wide array of emergency situations. This acquisition reflects MFD’s commitment to equipping its firefighters with modern tools to enhance response effectiveness. ​
Recognition of Firefighters’ Exemplary Service

In a February 7, 2025, ceremony at the American Muscle Car Museum, MFD honored several firefighters for their heroism, teamwork, and compassion. The event also included the swearing-in of recruits and recognition of recent promotions. Such ceremonies underscore the department’s appreciation for the dedication and bravery exhibited by its members. ​

MFD actively participates in community safety initiatives and collaborative training exercises. Recently, the department joined Health First and other Brevard County emergency medical services providers in conducting a realistic trauma drill. These exercises are crucial for preparing first responders for mass casualty incidents, ensuring coordinated and effective responses during actual emergencies. ​

Through continuous fleet upgrades, recognition of firefighter excellence, active community involvement, and strategic infrastructure planning, the Melbourne Fire Department demonstrates unwavering dedication to safeguarding the community and adapting to its evolving needs.
