Joe LeBlanc’s Little League Report: Merritt Island, Port St. John Advance To Sectionals

SECTIONAL PLAY BEGINS JULY 16

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Little League District 22 was able to dodge the rain and lightning on Friday evening to continue play in the Major baseball division at Mims’ Holder Park where Rockledge Little League met Merritt Island Little League.
MERRITT ISLAND 18, ROCKLEDGE 1: Rockledge’s Mason Derwitsch had a RBI double while Evan Schooley, Abe Gonzalez and Clayton Revels each had singles. For Merritt Island, Aiden Hart had a Grand Slam and 5 RBI while Anthony Cartagena had a 3-run homer and Brady Denaburg added a solo homer. Treyson DeLaCruz went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and picked up the win on the mound as Merritt Island finished 18-1 in four innings.
Meanwhile, at McKnight Family Sports Complex in Rockledge, the Major Softball division finished up with Rockledge Little League and Port St. John Little League battling it out for the Championship title.
PORT ST. JOHN 10, ROCKLEDGE 1: For Rockledge, M. Norris scored as Port St. John’s K. Haynes went 2-for-2 and scored 3 runs. S. Ogletree was 2-for-3 with a double and scored 3 runs. H. Butler was 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run. K. Williams pitched the entire game for Port with 10 strikeouts. Port St. John Little League won 10-1 in 5 1/2 innings (pictured above) and will represent District 22 in the Section 3 Major Softball Tournament scheduled for Saturday, July 16, in St. Augustine.
