Melbourne PD Officers, Firefighters Recognized For Acts Of Heroism At Eighth Annual Valor Awards

18 individuals team up to save five lives

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Several members of the Melbourne police and fire departments were honored for acts of extraordinary bravery and life-saving actions during the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida’s annual Valor Awards presentation.
Awards of Merit were presented to the following Melbourne Police Department employees for rescuing an elderly couple from a sinking houseboat during an overnight storm:
- Sergeant Bradley Blout
- Officer Eric Gould
- Officer Maurizio Iervasi
- Officer Miguel Canchon
- Officer Brett Self
Medals of Valor were presented to the following Melbourne police officers for stopping a serial robber who had been terrorizing neighborhoods in the south end of Melbourne:
- Sergeant Sheridan Shelley
- Officer Brett Self
- Officer Urian D’Errico
- Officer Timothy Sonnenberg
- Detective Mike Schneider
- Detective Mike Szczpanski
- Detective Dennis Higgins
Life Saving Awards were presented to the following Melbourne Fire Department crew members for saving the life of a man who was in cardiac arrest:
- Lieutenant Thomas Urban
- Driver Engineer John Carter
- Firefighter Jason Petronella
- Firefighter Robert Dowling
The following Melbourne Police officers also received Life Saving Awards:
- Tactical Flight Officer Bernard Bernardo jumped out of a helicopter to save a woman who was stranded in the ocean.
- Officer John Noles stopped a man from jumping off of the Melbourne Causeway.
The Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida Valor Awards Banquet is held annually to honor local police, fire, military and rescue personnel for acts of heroism and for “putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the citizens of our community.”
