Palm Bay Police Officer Ryan Van Note Honored By City, Awarded Life Saving Award

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The City of Palm Bay’s monthly spotlight is on Palm Bay Police Officer Ryan Van Note who was recently awarded the Life Saving Award.

On June 11, 2016, Officer Van Note responded to a call in reference to a small child and adult whose kayak capsized in the river.

Officer Van Note kayaked against the current for 200 yards, and once he arrived, he checked for injuries and started a plan of action to get them to safety.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Star arrived on a kayak to assist with the rescue. Deputy Star took the small child while Officer Van Note took the adult.

Officer Van Note had the male hold onto the outside of the kayak along with him and swam back down stream. Deputy Star monitored the 200 yard swim back and both boaters were safely handed over to Brevard County Fire Rescue.

Due to Officer Van Note and Deputy Cody Star’s quick thinking, both boaters were rescued from a life threatening event.
