McCarthy has team-high eight goals on season
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Following excellent performances during the week, women’s soccer’s Keira McCarthy and football’s Kenny Johnston have been selected as the Mike Erdman Auto Group Athletes of the Week.
McCarthy provided the lone goal in the Panthers’ 1-0 victory over Lynn on Saturday. The sophomore striker was tackled in the box while trying to dribble past her defender, earning a penalty kick for FIT.
The local product made the Fighting Knights pay for the error, calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net.
The score gives McCarthy a team-high eight goals on the season, tied for third most in the conference. The former Space Coast United player also ranks third in the league in points with 16.
Despite coming up short in the inaugural Coastal Classic against West Florida, tight end Kenny Johnston had a monster game to help give the Panthers a last ditch chance at the end of the contest.
The Jacksonville native hauled in nine passes for 185 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Johnston ranks third in the Gulf South Conference in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns with 471 and four, respectively. The tight end’s 25.37 yards per reception is good for sixth most in the nation.
McCarthy and Florida Tech will return to the pitch this Wednesday, travelling to Allendale, Michigan for a meeting with three-time defending national champion Grand Valley State.
The game, scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick, will be streamed nationally on WatchESPN and the ESPN app.
Johnston and the football team resume GSC action on Saturday, hosting North Alabama at 7 p.m. at Florida Tech Panther Stadium in FIT’s annual White Out Game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free White Out T-shirt, courtesy of Florida Tech University Online.
Jerry Durney and Paul Van Scott will have the call on 89.5 FM WFIT and WFIT.org. Links to live video and stats are available at FloridaTechSports.com.
