Brevard Public Schools Advanced Placement Program Earned 12,813 College Credits

During the 2015-16 school year

During the 2015-16 school year, Brevard high school students took a total of 4,271 advanced placement (AP) exams that resulted in a score of 3, 4, or 5.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – During the 2015-16 school year, Brevard high school students took a total of 4,271 advanced placement (AP) exams that resulted in a score of 3, 4, or 5. 

Based on students’ opportunity to earn at least three college credits for each AP exam of a 3 or higher, the total number of tests taken accounts for an estimated 12,813 earned college credits.

At an average rate of $211.87 per credit hour, the total cost savings for the county’s students and families was $2,714,690.31.

Key district standouts are as follows:

  • 45.3 percent of BPS seniors in 2016 took at least one AP course over their high school career
  • The number of AP exams given between 2015 and 2016 has increased 7.5 percent (2015: 7,064 vs. 2016: 7,592)
  • 13.8 percent of Hispanic students participated in AP exams. Out of these Hispanic students, 52.8 percent scored higher than a 3. (Hispanic students make up 9.7 percent of BPS high school students)
  • 5.6 percent of black students participated in AP exams. Out of these black students, 30 percent scored higher than a 3. (Black students make up 11.6 percent of BPS high school students)
  • In total, 56.3 percent of BPS’ AP exams received a 3 or higher. This is more than the state percentage of 54.1 percent
  • BPS students outscored or equaled students in Florida and globally in 18 area of 34 subject area tests

Eau Gallie, Heritage, and Rockledge high schools offer students the opportunity to earn college credit through the AICE Cambridge Program instead of the AP program. Therefore, these schools are not included in this data.

“We are extremely proud of how our Brevard students performed in 2016,” said Neyda Francis, assistant director of testing and accountability.

“Their AP scores outperformed or matched the state and worldwide scores in 18 of the 34 subject areas tested and the percent of students scoring at three or higher is two-percentage points higher than the state scores. Not only did the minority participation increase from 2012 by 414 students, but the number of AP exams being administered also increased.”
