BREVARD COUNTY, FLORDA – This week inmates from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Jail Complex have been harvesting potatoes at our Inmate Work Farm located off Pluckebaum Road in Cocoa.
The crop yielded approximately 20,000 pounds of red potatoes that will be utilized to feed inmates at our Brevard County Jail Complex. Potatoes are the largest food commodity we use at the Jail, so we used inmate labor to offset costs for our taxpayers.
The potatoes were 100 percent planted, maintained and harvested utilizing inmate labor and will even be prepared for inmate meals by trustees that are assigned to the Kitchen Crew.
By using inmate labor to produce this crop we saved our taxpayers approximately $10,000 and have another crop already planned and ready to go.
I would like to personally thank our Farm Team and Corrections Deputies for all they do to offset cost for our taxpayers by growing food, landscaping all of the county buildings in Brevard County and providing inmate labor on county construction projects throughout our community.
