SPORTS SPOTLIGHT: Why March Madness Is One of the Best Sports Events To Watch This Year
By Space Coast Daily // January 3, 2018
People get obsessed with their teams

During 2018, there will be plenty of great sporting events to watch. Tennis and golf tournaments will continue as they do every year. The Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics are set to take place in March. In June we will be graced with the Soccer World Cup, which is considered by many as the highlight of any sporting calendar.
However, March Madness beats all other competitions. The massive college basketball tournament creates insanity year after year. People get obsessed with their teams, with other teams, and with players they’ve never seen before. Friendships blossom. Enmity is stoked. People who’ve never watched basketball in their lives suddenly tune into every game.
Even if you’re not in the United States, you’ll be able to watch NCAA March Madness live online with one hack. Its popularity has spread so that it’s not only U.S. expats or tourists watching it from overseas.
And there are good reasons for that. March Madness is one of the best sports events to watch. Here’s why.
Brackets
When March Madness rolls around, you get to compare your clairvoyant skills with your friends. If you haven’t already filled out a bracket, I recommend you start. Not that you’re going to get everything right – there’s a 1 in 9.2 quintillion chance of that! – but it’s a great feeling to get even one right.
It’s most fun if you’re in on a bet with friends or colleagues. You’re not trying to do well, only better than the next person.
Underdogs
We all love a good underdog story. Unfortunately, Hollywood’s versions of them are starting to wear us out. They’re too obvious, too cloying, and almost always exaggerated. Which is why when you see a team do it in real life, it’s less of a miracle and more a triumph of the human spirit.
The top dogs will almost certainly win, although since lowly Leicester City won the English Premier League, anything can happen. But even if the status quo remains in general, we can more than make do with the smaller victories.
When a team that is given no chance beats one of the biggies, you’d have to be a cynic not to enjoy it (or a member of the other team). Because of the “one-and-done” format, they just have to win that one game to make an impact, not a full series.
Throw in a buzzer beater and you’ve got an occasion you’ll never forget. For years you’ll be saying, “Remember the time [small team] beat [big team] with just milliseconds to go?”
Everyone gets involved
Finally, one of the best things about March Madness is watching people become basketball fans all of a sudden. Those who are bored by the sport all year round end up backing a team, taking it more seriously than committed fans. Either they’ve filled out a bracket and want to win, or they’re just getting into it because everyone else is.
Either way, the madness spreads and quickly takes over. By the end, you’ll be wishing there was just one more game.
