Does Writing by Hand Still Matter in the Digital Age?
By Space Coast Daily // September 20, 2018
The digital age is a new age when everybody is constantly engaged in their phones or tablets. Now with the omnipresent internet, people have the whole world in their hand because of their smartphones.
Digitisation has webbed across all spheres of life. From online shopping for clothes to groceries, your life seems impossible without the internet. People have full-time jobs through the internet and they are earning quite well.
All of these are examples of how this digital world has gripped the human mind. It is actually a difficult question to answer whether people write by hand or not.
The Digital World Changes
This new world is ruled by technology. Technology keeps changing and so does our preferences for which phone or which laptop to buy. In some countries, children study with their laptops or tablets given to them at school.
Therefore, the use of technology is being encouraged in all places. Technology has made it easier to get someone to do your assignment or make a research etc. The growth of digitization did not start last year. It started ages ago but it drew attention just last few years with the growth of companies like Samsung, Apple, and Microsoft.
Soon writing was replaced by typing and paper by Microsoft word. Digitisation has been advantageous in various ways which are as follows:
1. Easy world
Digitization has made things very easy. You can stay lazy at one place and do multiple things just with one click. Whether it is watching TV or doing some work. Everything can be done from the place you want and at the time you want.
2. Less dependence on people
Automatic systems come with digitization. Business, engineering services or medical facilities have adopted automatic systems replacing human beings. Human beings tend to commit blunder mistakes due which the company might have to face major problems.
Also, they might be want to accept bribe money and make serious changes. Machines cannot do such mistakes and thus the result of the same will be more accurate and less influenced by human beings.
3. Multitasking
Technology lets you do any things at ones. Computers, smartphones, smart TVs – all are examples of multitasking. Gaming, watching movies, writing, watching photos, take photos or surf the internet – you can do everything at ones with a few clicks. As well, it helps people at work to solve tasks quickly which means more profit for the business.
4. No more waiting
Technology lets you do everything when you like. Now, you can shop at 3 am in the morning or at 12 noon. You don’t have to wait for evening to go to the market and then waste time in finding what you like.
5. From your comfort zone
Technology also made sure that you can do everything from where you like. You can shop for groceries, clothes, and accessories from your home or from your friend’s home. Maybe you are just surfing through the internet and you like something, you can just order it online and get it delivered at the door within a day or two.
Given the advantages, it can be said that digitization is not a very bad idea. But human minds have become slaves to the internet. People need the internet for the smallest thing which they could remember before.
Art of Writing in This Modern World
There was a time when handwritten notes were preferred over any form of printed copies of the same. All assignments are done via digital writing in most universities worldwide. There was a lot of emphasis on keeping handwriting neat and clean.
In schools, children got prices for having the best handwriting. Writers always wrote their first draft by hand and assistants took notes by hand. But now smartphones have made things easy by having software which can convert spoken words into written letters.
Consequently, writing has been affected definitely but it still exists. Following are some proofs of the same:
- Children at school are still learning to write by hand and get marks based on writing skills.
- Many famous writers still prefer their handwritten draft over the one on the computer.
- Handwriting quality is still tested in various ways, and notebooks still exist.
- Also, it is believed that you can remember more when you write by hand.
- The art of letter writing in the modern world still exists. Many people still prefer to write letters over mere Whatsapp chats.
Basically, these pieces of evidence and more are a proof of the fact that handwriting is still existent in this rapidly growing digital world. Small notes and some small things are still written by hand. But the availability of notes on phones is making things difficult for people who love to write by hand. Writing by hand is a form of art which was a necessity in the good old days but now it is not an obligation anymore.
This does not mean that people have stopped writing by hand. It is one of those basic skills acquired along with reading and listening. Digitisation is grossly spreading across people of all ages, fields, and class. But technology is changing constantly, however, there might be a time when we go back to handwriting on computers and smartphones. We can actually do it already with iPad Pro tablet and Stylus pen, for example. Thus it will compel people to write by hand again.
In short, handwriting does matter because it is important for people to acquire basic skills. If there is no computer or smartphones, people should still be able to write and communicate. Of course, the time of letters is long gone. But the fact that postcards the same as vinyl discs still remains is a tribute to handwriting. If you love to write by hand, do not let technology ruin your passion.
