Merritt Island Mustangs Volleyball Sweeps Santa Fe To Win Class 6A State Championship

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA – Coach Angie Patrick’s Merritt Island volleyball team has done it again as the Mustangs blanked Santa Fe 22, 25-17, 25-20 to win the Florida High School Athletic Association 6A state championship on Saturday.
Lexy Denaburg had 21 kills to lead the Mustangs to the three-set sweep.
Last week, the Mustangs also dominated the Tarpon Springs Spongers with a three-set sweep, 25-5, 25-20, 25-13, to advance to the 6A state championship game.
Merritt Island finished their 2018 championship season with 30-2 record, while Santa Fe posted a 26-6 record on the year.
Patrick was inducted into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 on the strength of her then nine straight district championships, and earning the Space Coast Coach of the Year title in 2005, 2006 and 2011 and Brighthouse Coach of the Year kudos in 2011 as the Mustangs won the state championship.
