It’s one of Italy’s most scenic places, one where you’re guaranteed to have amazing memorable experiences. Even just arriving to the island is an adventure, as you approach the island by boat and can view the impressive cliffs formed by the volcano which created the island.
Maybe you visit the island by cruise or maybe you plan to stay at one of Santorini’s high-end coastal resorts. Either way, travelers and photographers in Santorini will be awe-struck by the stunning turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and charming coastal villages. For any occasion, Santorini can provide what you need for a spectacular vacation.
Destination of Romance
Santorini has made a name for itself as being a romantic destination for travelers. Popular for honeymoons, weddings, and anniversary celebrations, when you visit Santorini the dreamy atmosphere will certainly give your trip the right mood.
Firá, the capital of Santorini, is known for its whitewashed houses built on terraces leading down to the ocean, creating a fairytale-like setting you won’t find anywhere else.
It’s a charming place to base a romantic vacation, with numerous local shops, options to walk or hire mules to tour the town, and ferries offering regular transportation from the port to other places on the island.
Nature and Scenery
By all accounts, Santorini has a stunning natural setting, dominated by the impressive volcano caldera that defines the island. With sloping cliffs leading down to the sea, the caldera is an amazing spot to view either by driving one of the scenic routes or taking boat cruises of the caldera.
Imagine a family vacation where you can enjoy the stunning views of Santorini from one of the cruise boats that bring people to view other small volcanic islands and bathe in hot springs created from the geothermal activity still present in the volcano.
To the southeast side of the island is the famous black-sand beach of Santorini, almost six kilometers in length between the cities of Perissa and Perivolos.
The Ancient Side of the Island
In addition to its romantic atmosphere and beaches, Santorini is known for some amazing ruins and historic sites. One of the best-known places in the ancient city of Thira, located on the southeast of the island and dating all the way back to the 9th century BC.
The crumbling ruins of the once mighty city are a great place for photographs of Santorini, with the Mediterranean Sea in the background. For a more in-depth look at the history of the island and to view numerous artifacts that have been discovered in various archaeological sites you can visit the Firá Museum of Archaeology.
While perfection may be hard to achieve, Santorini might be as close as you can get to a perfect vacation destination. Whether you’re a history fan, a nature lover, looking for a cultural experience, or just hoping to relax on the beach, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Santorini.
