BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – On behalf of the incredible men and women of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, my wife Susan and I would like to wish all of the Dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day.
While today is recognized as Father’s Day, each of us Dads knows all too well that being a Father is a 24 hour a day job, 365 days a year. In fact, in today’s society being a Father is one of the most important jobs in the world, ranking right up there with being a Mom.
Like each of you, as a Dad, I recognize just how important our job is, but as Sheriff, I see first hand how truly needed Fathers are in a son or daughter’s life and unfortunately what can happen when Dad is missing from a child’s life.
I was blessed to have a Dad who whooped my butt any time I got out of line (to be honest my Mom’s were worse) but a Dad who also taught me about character, pride in our country, and to have respect for my Mom, myself and others.
Equally as important through being a great role model he also taught me to one day be a Dad myself. Pops taught me that there were consequences for my actions both good and bad and that if you did bad stuff, bad stuff usually happens, conversely when you do good stuff good things happen.
My Father taught me that “it’s not if you work hard you will be successful, it’s if you don’t work hard you can’t be successful!!” That lesson has been the driving force behind everything I have ever attempted in my life, sports, work and even being a Husband and Dad.
I lost my Dad in 1997 to cancer and it was the most difficult thing I have ever faced! While I miss him every day of my life, what he taught me lives on inside of me today because he recognized that being a Dad was the most important job he was ever going to have and the most important lesson he would ever teach me!!
As I said earlier in this post, being a Father is one of the most important jobs in the world, so to every son and daughter out there please take a moment to thank your Dad today for doing their job.
Thank them for teaching you life’s lessons and thank them for training you to one day be a parent too.
On this Father’s Day, I encourage you to spend time with your Dad if you are still blessed to have the opportunity to do so. Sit with them, play catch with them, or if geography won’t allow you to personally visit with them, then spend time talking on the phone or webcam about how much you appreciate them being in your life.
If you are like me and your Father has passed then take some time today to reflect on how much he meant to you in your life and why.
And Dad’s, I hope today allows you the opportunity to spend time with your own children. Life is so short and every minute we get to be with our kids is a moment of love, a moment of thanks, and a moment of greatness.
I can assure you that I would give anything, to have just one more minute to tell my Dad how much I love him just one more time. On behalf of our entire agency, we hope you enjoy a very Happy and memorable Father’s Day.
