Armed Suspect Shot By Cocoa Police Officer After Fleeing Traffic Stop, FDLE Investigating

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a shooting that resulted in a suspect being shot in the leg after fleeing a traffic stop from Cocoa Police.
The suspect, Dana King from Rockledge, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to the investigation, patrol officers attempted a traffic stop on Mr. King in the area of 300 Pineda St. around at 11:47 p.m.
The suspect fled and then bailed from the vehicle fleeing on-foot into the backyard of a residence.
According to police, the responding officer ordered the suspect to stop several times, but the armed suspect did not listen to the officer’s commands.
As a result, the police officer fired one round from his police service weapon, striking the suspect in the leg.
Dana King, 44, was detained by police and immediately given aid as officers secured a weapon that was found next to the suspect.
King is expected to recover and will face multiple felony charges that include possession of cocaine, fleeing/eluding an officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The police officer was not injured and will be placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation continues, per protocol.
King is a convicted felon with a Florida Department of Corrections history dating back to 1994.
