BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Joan Majid is the Democrat candidate for Florida House of Representatives District 51 and is running against incumbent State Rep. Tyler Sirois.
Majid is an educator, an innovator and a leader who has a passion to fight for positive change and improvement wherever she sees a need.
While growing up in the suburbs of Long Island, New York, her father, a high school social studies and civics teacher, broke ground as his school’s first chapter leader of the newly formed United Federation of Teachers.
The Federation’s mission was to remain consistent with the American Federation of Teachers and to “champion fairness, democracy, economic opportunity, and high-quality public education.”
Her favorite club in high school was the Social Awareness and Action Club which is where she learned about prevailing social and financial inequality.
Those values learned at a young age continue to influence her today.
Majid earned a master’s degree in Education from CUNY College of Staten Island and taught elementary school in the challenging New York City school system with its multicultural student body.
She helped implement policies to maximize the quality of education for a diverse array of students, from those affected by in-utero drug dependence, homelessness, and learning disabilities to the intellectually gifted.
