SURFSIDE, FLORIDA – Miami-Dade search-and-rescue efforts continue Thursday morning after a 12-story condominium building collapsed during the overnight hours in Surfside near Miami.
Officials say they are bracing a significant amount of deaths after 130+ unit building was mostly occupied, according to city officials. Over half of the units collapsed, while the remaining condo units are still standing.
Gov. Ron DeSantis offered his condolences at a press briefing Thursday morning and announced he is traveling to Surfside today for support.
The condominium building is Champlain Towers South, which is located 8777 Collins Avenue in Surfside.
The 12-story building is Champlain Towers South, which was completed in 1981. Reports suggest the building was in the midst of roof construction at the time of collapse. However, the exact cause of the collapse still remains under investigation.
