Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice Appoints David Shapiro as Interim Medical Director

Dr. David Shapiro replaces Dr. Nabil Aziz, who has served since 2018

Dr. Shapiro will provide medical leadership assisting the medical staff in the delivery of patient care, medical education, and continue the advancement of clinical quality & safety for hospice patients.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice is pleased to announce the appointment of David Shapiro, MD as Interim Medical Director for Hospice Operations effective January 2, 2022.
Dr. Shapiro has been with Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice as an Assistant Medical Director and team physician since 2013.
He is currently a member of the Steward Medical Group and has hospital privileges at Melbourne Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Shapiro replaces Dr. Nabil Aziz, who served in this capacity since 2018. “I wish to express my sincerest thanks to Dr. Aziz for his time with Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice and for his enthusiasm, leadership, and dedication to our patients & families. It has been an honor to work alongside him to serve our Brevard county communities hospice needs,” said Sara Beil, Executive Director.
She added, “Dr. Aziz has been instrumental in improving quality initiatives and ensuring staff members and clinicians place quality and patient service at the forefront. Under Dr. Aziz’s medical directorship, Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice was awarded Joint Commission Accreditation in September 2019 and he helped to successfully launch Brevard Palliative Care this past month.”

Dr. Aziz will remain on staff as Medical Director for the newly launched Brevard Palliative Care program.
“As the need for palliative medicine continues to grow in our county, this will allow a more strategic focus to grow and develop this new program for Brevard,” Dr. Aziz shared.
In his role as the Interim Medical Director of Hospice Operations, Dr. Shapiro will provide medical leadership assisting the medical staff in the delivery of patient care, medical education, and continue the advancement of clinical quality & safety for our hospice patients.

Dr. Shapiro said, “having been involved with hospice care in Brevard for over 10 years, I am excited to lead this dedicated team to continue our mission of delivering high quality, compassionate end of life care to our community.” He continues to add “I am also looking forward to collaborating with our palliative care program leaders to help expand their services to care for more patients in need.”
Since 1984, Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice has been providing quality hospice care for Brevard County and has recently launched Brevard Palliative Care – a nurse practioner, community-based palliative care program with a focus on quality of life throughout the course of serious illness by matching treatments with patient goals.
