STORIES OF SERVICE – Merritt Island native Timothy Wieckowski has been promoted to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army and also accepted into the Army Funded Legal Education Program, which selects 25 soldiers annually to attend law school.

Upon graduation from law school, he will then become part of the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps.

Wieckowski is a graduate of Merritt Island High School where he joined the JROTC program in 2009 during his freshman year.

“I remained in the program throughout my entire time in high school,” said Capt. Wieckowski.

“I never really considered joining the military during this time, I simply enjoyed being in the program’s ability to test leadership potential so early.”

Under the mentorship and guidance of Merritt Island High JROTC Senior Army Instructor, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Scott Waggoner, he applied for an ROTC scholarship during his senior year and was awarded a three-year full-tuition scholarship to New York University, Duke University and Wake Forest University.

“Despite my doubts about joining the military, Lt. Col. Waggoner enabled me to believe in my potential to succeed as an Army officer, and I decided to accept the scholarship to attend Wake Forest University,” said Capt. Wieckowski.

After four years of collegiate ROTC, he graduated from Wake Forest summa cum laude in 2017 with a degree in history and a minor in German.

On November 11, 2017, Tim Wieckowski was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant and assessed into the Signal Corps. Above, Merritt Island High School JROTC Senior Army Instructor, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Scott Waggoner, left, swears in the newly-minted Second Lieutenant.

Wieckowski then deployed overseas twice, one nine-month tour in Poland in 2019 and a one-month exercise in Guam in 2021. He then moved to Fort Gordon, Georgia in November 2021 for the Signal Captain’s Career Course and was promoted to the rank of Captain on January 1, 2022.
