Brevard’s leading health system aims to meet people where they are with interesting and practical health information. Topics range from heart procedures to anxiety to, yes, COVID-19.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Health First specialists are waiting to speak to you – on your walk, in your car or anywhere you’ll listen.

Brevard’s leading health system has jumped into audio production with “Putting Your Health First,” a biweekly podcast that arrives at your smartphone or tablet at no charge wherever you get podcasts (Apple, Google Play or Spotify).

The first program featured Dr. Jeffrey Stalnaker, Health First’s Chief Medical Officer, discussing the latest on COVID-19.

The second program features two heart specialists named Campbell.

“It’s pretty funny because the other Dr. Campbell is a rather tall gentleman, and I’m a short gentleman,” says Dr. Kevin Campbell, “so I always ask, ‘Are you looking for the short Dr. Campbell or the tall Dr. Campbell?’”

The doctors go on to discuss so-called “silent heart attacks,” risk demographics and symptoms, modern diagnostics and lifesaving – and life improving – surgeries that are minimally invasive.

Heart attacks are top of mind for many folks, says Dr. Kevin Campbell, but they’re vascular in nature – there are structural and valvular deficiencies that are a part of heart disease, too, and this is where Health First’s network of specialists and surgeons shines.

“I agree,” says Dr. Matthew Campbell.

“The symptoms can sometimes overlap for two completely different disease processes, but the good news is the team at Health First has all the tools in the toolbox. We’re able to diagnose what’s going on …, and then offer the treatment plan for almost anything that’s happening in the diagnoses. We’re able to pull our strengths together and make the right decisions at the right time for the patients here in Brevard.”

And who should be most concerned about assessing their risk? Dr. Kevin Campbell has this warning for women.

“Women are often undertreated and underserved when it comes to heart disease, and it’s imperative that women understand what their risks are, and understand the No. 1 killer of women today is not breast cancer or uterine cancer. It’s heart disease.”

The podcast is a collaborative effort of Health First providers and leaders. Its creation and ongoing production have been a labor of love for Marketing Director Jennifer MacKendree, above. “We want listeners here and nationally to hear us and think about wellness the way our specialists think about it. At Health First, our aim is to educate the community to be proactive with their health instead of reactive,” MacKendree says.
