BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police officers arrested 39-year-old Travius Roberts from Melbourne for various drug offenses, child abuse and assaulting an officer on Sunday.

The investigation began after a traffic stop on a 2022 black Mercedes on Sunday, which was operated by Travius Roberts.

During the investigation, Melbourne Police Department K-9 was utilized.

Roberts stood by another vehicle while the open-air sniff was conducted by the K-9 unit.

The other vehicle contained Robert’s girlfriend and three children. Based on the open-air sniff, probable cause was obtained to search the vehicle.

A loaded firearm was immediately located on the driver door compartment where Roberts was sitting.

According to Melbourne PD, when the officers attempted to detain Roberts, he resisted officers and entered the passenger seat of the vehicle. While doing so, he proceeded to sit on and crush one of the children who is approximately one year-old.

Officers immediately observed Roberts actions were hurting the child and they attempted to physically remove him while giving loud verbal commands.

Roberts ignored the officer’s commands and his actions caused harm to the child.

Roberts utilized the vehicle door to strike officers and used his fingernails to scratch an officer’s face.

At this time, officers removed the female and the other children from the vehicle. Officers, along with Roberts girlfriends, continued to tell him he was sitting on and harming the child.

Roberts stated he knew he was sitting on the child and continued to resist and sit on the young child. Roberts braced himself on the passenger seat and attempted to shift the vehicle in drive.

Officers prevented Roberts from putting the vehicle in drive and, after many attempts, pull the child from underneath him.

Roberts then grasped one of the officer’s bullet proof vest and began to pull the officer multiple times, causing the officer to hit his face on the door frame.

An officer deployed his Taser but Mr. Roberts removed the probes from his person rendering it ineffective. The altercation continued but, eventually, officers were then able to take Mr. Roberts into custody.

Roberts collapsed from exhaustion and he was immediately transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center (HRMC) for medical assistance. The one-year old child was also taken to HRMC for a head and torso injury.
