Mims Man Convicted of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder After April 2020 Shooting

Somerset faces up to Life in Prison
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A Brevard County Jury convicted 37-year-old Mark Somerset from Mims on one count of Attempted First-Degree Premeditated Murder Inflicting Great Bodily Harm, and one count of Shooting Into A Building or Vehicle.
With the convictions, Somerset faces a maximum sentence of Life in Prison.
In a five-day trial presided over by Circuit Judge Tesha Ballou, Assistant State Attorneys Jason Andersen and Will Scheiner presented evidence to the jury who deliberated just under 90 minutes before returning with the guilty verdicts.
On April 20, 2020, Brevard County Deputies responded to Scottsmoor Landing Park where they found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds. After being airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries, she underwent extensive treatment being hospitalized for nearly two months.
With the victim initially unable to tell detectives what happened, they turned to surveillance video from homes and businesses in the area.
Detectives determined a Honda Civic left the area just after the shooting and with assistance from Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, identified the vehicle’s owner as Somerset.
A search warrant recovered a 9-mm firearm from Somerset’s vehicle, and later matched to bullets fired at the victim.
Somerset was arrested on May 18, 2020, and has been held in custody since then.
Somerset was ordered held on no bond at the Brevard County Jail until sentencing, scheduled before Judge Ballou on June 21, 2022, at 1:30 pm at the Historic Titusville Courthouse.
