BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical storm warnings have been issued by the National Hurricane Center across south Florida and the Keys ahead of the likely formation of a Gulf tropical storm that the National Weather Service said will bring heavy rain and gusty winds this weekend.

The storm is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Alex later today or early Saturday as it draws closer to Florida.

The NHC expects the storm to come ashore Saturday morning at about 7 a.m. in the Fort Myers to Marco Island area as a low-end tropical storm, with heavy rain to the south of the I-4 corridor.

In Brevard County today, expect a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. with southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, on Friday night in Brevard County, there’s a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11 p.m. with a chance of precipitation being 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

On Saturday, storms could produce heavy rainfall with an east southeast wind of 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90%, with new rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches.

On Saturday night, expect showers and thunderstorms likely before 8 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain, with north winds of 10 to 15 mph becoming east in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

On Sunday, a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is predicted with north northwest winds around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

On Sunday night, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 72 and north winds around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
