BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field.
In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring Panther men’s soccer player Tomas Casas, a sophomore who is majoring in Biomedical Science.
Originally from La Calera, Argentina, Tomas in his first season at Tech after transferring from Lubbock Christian. Casas has started all 15 games this season in midfield, helping the Panthers to a 9-0-6 record while recording the second most minutes played by any outfield player.
It’s been a whirlwind first few months for Tomas in Melbourne both on and off the pitch, so we caught up with him to find out how he’s made the most of it.
■ What’s your major at Florida Tech and why did you choose this? Is it something that you’ve always wanted to do?
I’m currently studying biomedical science. I didn’t know that the name of the major was going to be biomedical science, but I was always attracted to human anatomy and physiology.
When I was looking at the programs here at Florida Tech, biomedical science was the one that attracted me the most, so that’s why I chose it.
■ Having previously been at Lubbock Christian, what was it about Florida Tech that made you want to be here?
Well, one of the things was the prestige that the school has academically speaking.
I think the STEM department is very, very prestigious, and that attracted me a lot but also, the location. Being near a beach is something that not every school in the US has, so I think it’s very valuable. And when I was talking to my coaches, they wanted to win the conference and be in the top 10 in the nation, and I think that’s very important for me as well.
■ How do you plan to use your degree after graduation?
I will try to pursue my master’s. I don’t know which masters yet but if not, I would like to work in something related to anatomy or physiology.
■ What are some of the exciting projects that you’ve been able to work on in classes here?
I am really enjoying my bio lab, we’re dissecting specimens and I think that’s very interesting. Because it allows you to appreciate the anatomy not only of humans but of animals as well and how we are related and how we differ from them.
■ How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for what you’re doing now and what do you take from the pitch that you apply to your studies?
I think that sport educates me in a lot of aspects, especially off the pitch, because it allows me to have a responsibility to be accountable. Not only for my teammates but for my coaches and my classmates. I think soccer is a big aspect of my life and it allowed me to grow as a person as well as a college athlete.
■ What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech that has an interest in Biomedical Science?
I would advise them to really look into the program, see if it’s what they want to do and if it’s what they want to do, and they are sure about it, go for it because I’m really enjoying it, I’m learning a lot. Realizing that I am interested in more stuff than I thought I was before coming to Florida Tech. So I would say to them, go for it.
■ What have you enjoyed the most so far during your first season here at Florida Tech?
Obviously being undefeated is a major part of it but academically speaking, as I mentioned earlier, my labs are very interesting. I’m making a lot of relationships with my classmates, which I think is pretty cool because I get to know and be immersed in the American culture as well.
