JUDY BERMAN: I want the viewer to experience a deeper connection to nature
“Through my art, I want the viewer to experience a deeper connection to nature and to feel the same calm, peace and joy I felt when I painted it.”
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – When I’m painting, I aim to capture those quiet, fleeting moments in life: a fawn pausing by a stream for a refreshing drink, a child catching the summer breeze on a tree swing, or the memory of a rescue horse that our granddaughter rode years ago.
Through my art, I want the viewer to experience a deeper connection to nature and to feel the same calm, peace and joy I felt when I painted it.
Many of my painting ideas begin with a story.
That fawn by a stream reminds me of my aunt’s farm and a fawn they took care of that was abandoned or orphaned. The child on the swing symbolizes the carefree days of our youth.
And the rescue horse, “Kidd,” represents the freedom he felt on an open range. I donated my painting of “Kidd,” which was sold on Dec. 10 at a silent auction to benefit HART – Hidden Acres for Rescue Horses.
The “Horseshoe Project” was a community art project to raise money for the rehabilitation and retraining of rescue horses. It was held at Swan Lake Stables Native Trails in Titusville.
What is the message to viewers? They may draw on their own memories when they see my paintings.
My palette is often bold. The colors I choose depend on whether the mood is mysterious, dramatic or reflect a sunny day feeling.
Growing up, I loved to draw – other students in high school, animals and whatever took my fancy at the moment.
But I didn’t begin painting – acrylic painting – until after I retired from teaching in 2016. That’s when I stepped into Lori Prell Studio in Cocoa Village.
Thanks to Lori Prell’s patience, guidance and support, I went from not knowing how to “load a brush” (how much paint to put on a brush) to creating landscape paintings and portraits that have brought joy to others.
Taking on a challenge in painting has helped me grow as an artist. I’m taking online art lessons from Acrylic University, and this past April, I took art lessons at Scottsdale Artists’ School in Arizona.
I hope my paintings inspire you to tap into your own creative resources. Whether it’s through art, music or writing, we all have something to say.
My art is on display – and for sale – along with prints and notecards of my paintings at Green Circle Art Gallery, 313 Brevard Avenue in Cocoa Village. Call 321-794-8527 for more information.
