BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Titusville Police Department recognized Verda Blackburn, who, in 1954, became the department’s first policewoman.
Policewoman Blackburn was in charge of directing and controlling traffic, aiding students across the street and stopping and slowing traffic at the Titusville Elementary School zone on Washington Avenue.
These duties alone took almost six hours out of Policewoman Blackburn’s day, and yet she still found the time to grow her list of responsibilities as an exemplary citizen of the City of Titusville.
Blackburn worked as a cashier-clerk in the local drug store, and serve as the resident manager of the Titusville Housing Authority housing projects on a part-time basis collecting the residents rent monies.
