BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Cocoa Beach Mayor Ben Malik announced his resignation on Thursday after accepting a job that prohibits him from being on the Cocoa Beach City Commission.

Malik has been mayor since 2016 and his current term was set to end in 2024.

His last meeting will be August 22 at 6 p.m.

Malik has lived in Cocoa Beach since 2007, is a graduate of the University of Florida and is Vice President/Commercial Banker at Florida Bank of Commerce. He was a Cocoa Beach City Commissioner 2012 to 2016 and is a former member of the Cocoa Beach Planning Board and Cocoa Beach Citizens Academy.

“I will certainly miss my colleagues, city staff and residents but have an incredible new opportunity that I have accepted that precludes me from holding public office,” said Malik. “I hope someone will continue the path forward to guide our city.”

Vice Mayor Keith Capizzi will take over as mayor, and another commissioner will assume the vice mayor position as the city commission works to appoint a new commissioner for the vacant seat.

A new commissioner will also be appointed at an upcoming meeting, according to the city.
