Former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden will face off live tonight in 2024’s first presidential debate, set on CNN at 9 p.m. ET.

This debate will broadcast live from the CNN Atlanta studio, with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash moderating, and also acting as monitors who can unilaterally mute both candidate’s microphone.

The debate format is 90-minutes with no opening statements and no studio audience, with two commercial intermissions.

Each candidate will have two minutes to provide responses to questions, one minute for rebuttals and another minute for follow-ups. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed.

CNN will simulcast the debate for free on a collection of other networks, with the agreement that the network’s on-air watermark remain on the screen for the debate’s full 90 minute run time.

ABC will host the second debate on September 10, with David Muir and Linsey Davis serving as moderators.

This is the first time since 1988 that the Commission on Presidential Debates has been circumvented by the leading candidates of both parties. While presidential debates are not required, the first presidential debate in the modern era was held between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960.

No debates took place in 1964, 1968 and 1972. Debates resumed in 1976 and continued in the 1980 and 1984 election cycles. The Commission on Presidential Debates became the formal sponsor of presidential and vice presidential debates beginning in 1988.

A date for a vice presidential debate has not been set, although the Biden-Harris Campaign has proposed holding one after the Republican Convention in late July.
