Deborah Darbonne – Meet the Principal Who’s Championing Students and Educators in the Classroom and Beyond

For Deborah Darbonne, every morning starts the same: early and brimming with opportunities to make a difference. Known as the “Leader of Leaders,” she has devoted three decades of her life to underserved schools, making it her mission to help every student reach their greatest potential.

“I have a deep passion for education and a strong desire to contribute positively to the educational system,” says Darbonne. “The education field offers me countless opportunities to enact meaningful change and support student success.”

Her career is defined by determination, resilience, and an unwavering belief in every student’s ability to succeed despite their background. At the heart of her work is an interest in social justice and educational equity. She’s committed to shaping the lives of her students, staff, and community while also addressing broader societal concerns. 

The Driving Forces Behind Deborah Darbonne’s Chosen Career

Darbonne’s journey in education has been significantly shaped by her personal experiences and aspirations. Ambitious and independent, she has preferred to forge her own path from a young age. Among her proudest accomplishments is earning her doctorate degree from the University of Florida while raising her son on her own. 

As a child of immigrant parents, Darbonne experienced inequities in school early in her life, which have stuck with her to this day. These experiences have fueled her desire to pursue a career in the educational system. 

Beyond her dedication to equity and social justice, she credits her genuine love for learning as another key reason for wanting to serve students, teachers, and families. These personal values and experiences inspire her to find flaws in the school system and search for effective solutions. 

The Impact of Deborah Darbonne’s Leadership on Underserved Communities

After just a few years working as a teacher, Darbonne quickly advanced through the ranks, her grit and determination recognized by her superiors. Since being promoted to principal, Darbonne has run full speed toward every project, challenge, and opportunity that has come her way. 

“I see my current role as principal as an opportunity to lead and shape the direction of a school community as well as have a significant impact on the lives of students, teachers, and families,” she says. 

Title I schools are notorious for low performance and struggling students and staff. Under Darbonne’s leadership, she has transformed them into flourishing learning environments. As an educator who “walks the talk,” her results in Florida schools speak for themselves. 

Despite economic and societal challenges, students’ academic performance in these schools has risen dramatically. Her efforts have not only improved academic metrics but have also created a positive environment built on mutual respect and support.

Deborah Darbonne has a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction that includes a specialization in Teachers, Schools, and Society, highlighting her devotion to issues that extend beyond the classroom. 

Educators continue to benefit from her knowledge, which she’s utilized to create targeted interventions and comprehensive professional development plans backed by data. These tools have been instrumental to her ultimate strategy: inspiring teachers to recognize their potential to influence their students’ lives, both within the classroom and the greater community. 

Darbonne believes that when educators come together to advocate for their students, they can overcome the barriers that are holding them back.

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Deborah Darbonne views her career as more than just a job, as evidenced by her commitment to her students. About a decade after she first started teaching, a former student, Alice Brown, called and asked her to attend her high school graduation.

Brown, who grew up in a low-income neighborhood with a high crime rate, struggled to keep up in class upon entering elementary school. For many educators, her placement in ESE classes seemed fitting, but Darbonne disagreed.

“As Alice’s second grade ESE Resource Teacher, I noticed her potential and decided to take a personal interest in her progress,” she recalls. “I became her mentor, meeting with her regularly to discuss her goals, struggles, and dreams. The more I met with her, the more I felt that she did not belong in Special Education classes, so I worked tirelessly to get her dismissed from the Special Education program.”

Darbonne’s mentorship paved the way for Brown’s removal from the ESE program just before entering the third grade. She continued to coach Brown for several years but eventually moved to another school when she was promoted to Assistant Principal. 

The former student’s invitation caught Darbonne by surprise, prompting her to ask, “Why me?” Brown credited her success to her former mentor, conveying gratitude for her guidance and belief in her abilities and expressing her desire to have Darbonne witness her most significant milestone thus far. 

Seeing Brown walk across the graduation stage deeply moved Darbonne, reaffirming her choice to work in the educational field. 

“My career was forever shaped by the invitation to Alice’s graduation,” says Darbonne. “It was a tangible reminder of the impact that a dedicated educator can have on a student’s life. This moment not only validated my past efforts but also inspired me to advocate more passionately for students’ futures.”

To this day, she continues to uplift her students and transform their lives, helping them recognize their unique talents and abilities. As she looks ahead, she’s driven by her student-centered approach, guiding the younger generation toward brighter futures.

Deborah Darbonne Is Raising the Next Generation of Leaders

Darbonne is someone that anyone would want on their side, especially if you’re a child. She recalls her time serving as a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program as one of the most rewarding experiences of her lifetime. 

As a Big Sister, Darbonne bonded with her “Little” by accompanying her to various places in the local area to hang out and talk. She served as a safe space, giving her Little the opportunity to open up about her dreams and struggles.

Beyond being personally fulfilling, Darbonne hoped that serving as a Big Sister would add value to the life of her own child. 

“By volunteering as a Big Sister, I was also able to model kindness and compassion for

my son,” she says. “As an only child, it is important to me that he understands the power of serving others.”

Darbonne’s servant heart has led her to pursue other avenues to help kids. At one point, she was appointed by the court to the role of Guardian ad Litem (GAL), which involved numerous responsibilities related to child welfare. 

As she worked through cases involving divorce, abuse, neglect, parental rights, and other legal matters, she sought to ensure every child’s voice was heard.

Her efforts to uplift children from all walks of life speak to her commitment to empowering and leading the next generation. She encourages them to advocate for themselves and others, inviting them to follow in her footsteps and support those who will come after.

Deborah Darbonne’s Dedication Outside of the Classroom 

Darbonne’s devotion to empowerment and growth extends beyond the classroom. At home, she’s a dedicated mother to her son, whom she says changed her life and is her most profound achievement. After her son was born, Darbonne says that her identity underwent a radical reinvention. 

“Becoming a mother has reshaped my identity, priorities, and perspective,“ she says. Her goals and desire for success didn’t fade; rather, she discovered that her purpose was no longer solely tied to her career. 

She compares motherhood to the effort involved in earning her doctorate degree, adding that being a mom has presented her with challenges and a sense of accomplishment. While her priorities may have shifted, she has maintained her commitment to those outside of her immediate family. 

Whether Darbonne is at school or home, she’s always guiding someone, from her staff and students to her son. Mentorship is imbedded in her DNA, driving her to support everyone around her.

What The Future Holds For Deborah Darbonne

A self-motivated individual driven by success, Darbonne is always looking ahead to what’s next. Currently, she’s busy with a number of creative initiatives at Florida City Elementary School. 

With the help of new technology, she’s implementing tools that will allow her students to learn in ways that suit them best. She’s also developing an intricate social-emotional learning (SEL) program to equip students with important life skills like emotional regulation, empathy, and relationship building. 

Darbonne is also working hard to establish partnerships with local organizations that can offer additional resources to students and their families. 

As she looks toward the future, she remains committed to confronting educational disparities and being a voice for society’s most disadvantaged. Her goal is to create a world where every student feels they have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
