BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech President John Nicklow said in an evening note to the campus community on Thursday that all campus residents are safe following Hurricane Milton and early indications suggest the university’s Melbourne campus sustained only minor damage.

Below  is his message:

“I’m pleased to report that the university has weathered Hurricane Milton with our trademark teamwork and perseverance. I want to personally thank all of you for your patience and diligence over the last few days.

A preliminary assessment of the campus shows only minor damage and everyone safe. All power has been restored this afternoon and our teams will conduct a more thorough assessment of all buildings tomorrow morning.

At this time, university offices remain closed through the end of the day Friday. Panther Dining Hall is anticipated to re-open for residential students by 10 a.m. Friday. Remember, everyone should utilize caution when moving around campus as there is some debris that still must be cleared from certain areas, including parking lots. We anticipate campus being better accessible beginning at noon Friday and are planning to open our Clemente Center to students at that time.

Regular university operations are anticipated to resume on Saturday. Fall Break remains in effect for students on Monday and Tuesday, with all classes resuming as scheduled on Wednesday. All staff return to work and offices re-open on Tuesday following the Monday Indigenous People’s Day/Columbus Day holiday.

I want to take a moment to commend our faculty, staff and students for the can-do spirit and commitment to community that they have demonstrated during this storm. No matter the adversity, I’m confident our people remain our greatest asset and they are indeed Florida Tech Strong! Other communities did not make out so well during the hurricane, and I know we all stand ready to support them in any way that we can.”
