MILTON HURRICANE UPATE: Brevard Public Schools to Close All Schools and Offices on Wednesday and Thursday

WATCH: National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Michael Brennan provides an update on Tropical Storm Milton. Hurricane and storm surge watches could be issued as early as late Sunday for Florida as Milton is about 780 miles west-southwest of Tampa according to NHC’s 5 p.m. update on Sunday.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools officials said they will close all schools and offices on Wednesday and Thursday.

“As the storm moves closer, a more detailed forecast will be made available,” said BPS officials. “We will update families if anything changes.”

The district will continue to work collaboratively with Brevard County Emergency Operations and other local agencies to monitor the storm’s progress and determine the best course of action for the safety of our students, staff, and families.

“We work with the Brevard County EOC to make the best/most informed decisions,” said BPS officials.

“A more precise understanding of where the storm is projected to make landfall will make a significant difference in the impacts for our county. As stated, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust accordingly.”

As of 5 p.m. today, the National Hurricane Center said Milton has strengthened into a Category 1 Hurricane, with max sustained winds of 85 mph. Milton is still forecast to intensify into a major hurricane early this week and remain a major hurricane as it approaches the west coast of Florida midweek.

Hurricane and storm surge watches could be issued as early as late Sunday for Florida as Milton is about 780 miles west-southwest of Tampa according to NHC’s 5 p.m. update on Sunday.

Currently, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is moving east-southeast at 6 mph and is expected to gain major hurricane status on Tuesday.

On the Space Coast, rainfall amounts of 6 to 10 inches are forecast and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties ahead of Milton’s landfall on the Florida west coast Wednesday morning.

As of 1 p.m. today, Milton has strengthened into a Category 1 Hurricane, with max sustained winds of 80 mph. Milton is still forecast to intensify into a major hurricane early this week and remain a major hurricane as it approaches the west coast of Florida midweek.
