TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA – Florida State football head coach Mike Norvell whacked his senior coaching staff Sunday with the firing of offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Alex Atkins, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller, and wide receivers coach Ron Dugans, according to a release.
This week’s 52-3 loss to Notre Dame tied for the worst loss in program history.
Following a loss to North Carolina on Nov.2, the Seminoles finished 1–7 in ACC play, their worst conference record in program history.
“I appreciate the work these three men have provided over the last five years with me at Florida State,” Norvell said. “They are all great men with families who also have poured into our program. We had many great moments together here, and I have never doubted their passion for our players and for Florida State.”
“Unfortunately, we have not upheld the Florida State standard with our results on the field this season. I did not make any of these decisions lightly, but I felt changes needed to be made to elevate our program back to where we all desire it to be.”
The Seminoles entered the season as the defending ACC champion with Norvell, who is in his fifth year as their head coach. Despite high pre-season expectations, including a top-ten poll ranking, the Seminoles’ 1-9 record was their worst start to a season since 1974.
The Seminoles became bowl-ineligible following a loss to Miami, the first time for a defending power conference champion since USC in 2018.
The ACC released its pre-season poll in July during media days, and the Seminoles were predicted to finish first in the conference, receiving 81 of the 170 first-place votes.
