Rockledge High School Wins Top Two Spots at Florida Tech’s Business Ethics Competition

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA—Two teams from Rockledge High won first and second place at the 25th annual Bisk College of Business High School Business Ethics Competition on Nov. 1. Viera High took third.

The Rockledge team of students Janelis Hernandez, Breydon Peacock, Jeremiah Perez, and Natalie Norcross, and teacher/coach Christine Kearns ’04 took first at the competition, which is designed to encourage high school students to explore the subject of ethics and leadership, reflect on how ethical principles are related to decision-making in the business world, and evaluate the ethical adequacy of actual decisions made by managers.

The second-place Rockledge team, also coached by Kearns, featured students Mariam Mizyed, Angel Gutierrez, James Sanders, and Kees Jeenings.

Viera took third with a team of student Jonathan McKune, teacher/coach Joe Mantecon, and students Sophia Tiflati, Erin Lynch, and Michael DeMarco.

In addition to Rockledge and Viera, students from Astronaut, Cocoa Jr./Sr., and Melbourne Central Catholic participated in the competition, which is supported by Community Credit Union and Brevard Public Schools.

All participants in the competition are guaranteed a minimum merit scholarship of $12,000, renewable for three additional years, if they enroll at Florida Tech.

Members of the 1st-place team will receive an additional $4,000 per year academic grant, members of the 2nd-place team will receive an additional $3,000 per year, and members of the 3rd-place team will receive an additional $2,000 per year.

Additionally, Community Credit Union presented $500 cash awards to each student member of the first-place winning team along with a $500 Coach Award. The Bisk College of Business presented $250 cash awards to students and coaches on the second-place team, $125 per student, and $250 for the coach on the third-place team.
