Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Identifies Subject of Deputy-Involved Shooting in Viera

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has identified 55-year-old Robert Barry of Viera as the subject involved in the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on December 17.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has identified 55-year-old Robert Barry of Viera as the subject involved in the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on December 17.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy involved in the shooting incident as Field Training Officer William Mosebach.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Tuesday, December 17, at approximately 2:45 a.m., when deputies responded to the 1100 block of Egret Lake Way in Viera about a disturbance.

“Upon arrival, deputies learned that a domestic disturbance had occurred where Robert Barry threatened a female with a firearm and a knife,” said a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

“In an effort to get away from Barry, the female ran to a neighbor’s residence to report the incident to law enforcement.”

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Deputies then made telephone contact with Barry, who was not cooperative with the investigation and was making verbal threats.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., Barry exited his residence while holding a handgun to his head.

“As deputies attempted to negotiate with him, the male (Barry) pointed the handgun at them, and a deputy was forced to respond to the threat of the firearm by discharging his weapon,” said a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

Barry was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy involved in the shooting incident as Field Training Officer William Mosebach. He is currently a patrol deputy assigned to the West Precinct and joined the Sheriff’s Office after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2012 through 2019.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, FTO Mosebach has been a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office member since 2020. He is currently a patrol deputy assigned to the West Precinct and joined the Sheriff’s Office after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2012 through 2019.

“The investigation is still active and ongoing at this time,” said a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

“FTO Mosebach has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary in all deputy-involved shootings. Once the investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the State Attorney for review.”
