Lagoon Straight Talk Event Set Dec. 10, Will Discuss Indian River Lagoon Past, Present and Future

The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition will conduct another free Lagoon Straight Talk on December 10 at the Eau Gallie Civic Center at 1551 Highland Avenue in Melbourne. Five speakers/panelists, experts, and visionary leaders will provide insight into the lagoon’s problems, current restoration efforts, and progress and offer a glimpse into its future.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition will conduct another free Lagoon Straight Talk on December 10 at the Eau Gallie Civic Center at 1551 Highland Avenue in Melbourne.  

The 10th Lagoon Straight Talk event, starting at 5:30 p.m., will feature a dozen information tables hosted by local Lagoon organizations.

Attendees can ask questions before and after the speaker/Q&A. A full-sized residential Advanced septic system will be displayed in the parking lot, and technical representatives will answer questions.

Five speakers/panelists, experts, and visionary leaders will provide insight into the lagoon’s problems, current restoration efforts, and progress, as well as a look into its future.

After their brief presentations, they will be seated as a panel to respond to moderated questions from attendees.

■ Virginia Barker: Director of Brevard County Natural Resources Department; A Progress report on what has been done, and what is still needed to restore the health of the Indian River Lagoon.

■ Anthony Gubler: Staff, Brevard Natural Resources Department; Septic System Upgrades and replacements and County incentive programs for upgrading residential systems.

■ Olivia Escandell: Conservation Manager, Brevard Zoo, Restore Our Shores Volunteer-based Habitat Restoration Success stories.

■ Keith Winsten: Chief Executive Officer, East Coast Zoological Society of Florida: Impact of the  Aquarium and Duane De Freese Coastal Conservation Hub on the future of the Lagoon.

■ Austin Fox: Florida Institute of Technology, Assistant Professor of Ocean Sciences: Research on Life at the bottom of the Lagoon.
