DeSantis confirmed he will appoint Moody to the Senate on Jan. 20

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he will appoint Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to the U.S. Senate seat, which Senator Marco Rubio will soon vacate. Rubio, who had his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, is expected to be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State following his inauguration.

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he will appoint Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to the U.S. Senate seat, which Senator Marco Rubio will soon vacate.

Rubio, who had his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, is expected to be confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s Secretary of State following his inauguration.

DeSantis confirmed that he plans to officially appoint Moody to the Senate on January 20, the same day Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States.

Moody has worked alongside DeSantis throughout his governorship, playing a pivotal role in advancing his legislative agenda. At a press conference, DeSantis praised Moody as a dedicated leader with a proven track record of action on critical issues.

“I’ve thought long and hard about this decision,” DeSantis said.

“We did a lot of research. I wanted someone with a demonstrated record of delivering results on important issues. Talk is cheap. We need people who show their commitment through their actions.”

The governor expressed confidence in Moody’s ability to serve Florida effectively in Washington.

“That’s why today I’m proud to announce that I am selecting our Attorney General, Ashley Moody, to serve as our next U.S. Senator,” DeSantis declared.

Moody said she looks forward to continuing to serve Floridians at the national level. “

Thank you so much. I will bring the same persistence, passion, and tenacity to the U.S. Senate that I have as Florida’s Attorney General,” she said.

“If you’ve worked with me over the past six years, you know I don’t view this as a job — it’s a calling.”

Although Moody had previously emphasized her commitment to her duties as attorney general, she accepted the governor’s offer with enthusiasm.

She had told reporters in November, “I love being in leadership, working with President Trump, working with Governor DeSantis, and I hope to continue advocating for Floridians.”

The governor’s decision follows speculation regarding other potential candidates for the Senate seat, including Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of Donald Trump. Lara Trump, however, withdrew from consideration, citing the need for reflection and encouragement from her family.

Senator Rick Scott quickly congratulated Moody, taking to social media to express his support.

“I welcome @AGAshleyMoody to the United States Senate! Ashley has done an incredible job fighting for Floridians and keeping our communities safe as Attorney General. I have no doubt she will do an incredible job as senator!” Scott tweeted.
