NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that the driver who rammed a vehicle into a large crowd on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning acted with intent.
Speaking at a press briefing, Kirkpatrick described the suspect’s actions as deliberate and calculated. The individual drove a pickup truck down Bourbon Street “at a very fast pace,” bypassing police barricades, and fired a gun at officers from the vehicle. Two officers were struck by gunfire and are now in stable condition.
“This was very intentional behavior,” Kirkpatrick stated. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.”
The police chief emphasized that this was not a case of drunk driving but a more complex and serious situation. “Based on the information we have right now, this incident was far more premeditated,” she said.
The attack left 31 people injured, with 26 victims transported to University Medical Center, four to Ochsner Baptist, and one to Tulane Medical Center. Kirkpatrick acknowledged there could be additional victims at other hospitals.
Tragically, ten people lost their lives in the attack. “This is an incredibly tragic situation,” Kirkpatrick said.
The FBI has taken over the investigation. The status of the suspect remains unclear at this time.
Despite the tragedy, Kirkpatrick encouraged residents and visitors to continue enjoying the city’s New Year’s Day celebrations. She assured the public that security measures were in place, including at the Superdome, where the Sugar Bowl game between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame was set to take place.
“This city remains strong,” Kirkpatrick said. “We will recover from this tragedy, and we will ensure the safety of all who come to New Orleans.”
