WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reportedly spent $59 million to house undocumented migrants in luxury hotels in New York City, according to statements made by Elon Musk.
Musk claimed on social media platform X that these expenditures violated federal law and disregarded a presidential executive order.
“This funding was designated for American disaster relief, yet it was redirected to cover accommodations for illegal immigrants in high-end hotels,” Musk stated on Feb. 10.
He further announced that efforts would begin immediately to reclaim the funds.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, whose state has taken legal action against FEMA over claims of biased disaster relief funding, responded to the news by suggesting that mismanagement and corruption within the agency might run deeper than currently known.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also weighed in, condemning the allocation of taxpayer dollars for migrant housing. “This is a clear violation of the law. People should be held accountable,” she stated.
In response, Acting FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton acknowledged the issue and confirmed that such payments had been suspended as of Feb. 9.
“I appreciate the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for bringing this to my attention. FEMA will no longer issue these payments, and those responsible will be held accountable,” Hamilton wrote in a reply to Musk’s post. He also expressed concerns over congressional decisions that assigned FEMA tasks beyond its traditional scope in 2023 and 2024.
Under Biden, FEMA took money AWAY from Americans in need of disaster relief and spent it on 5 star hotels for illegals.

FEMA Faces Scrutiny
FEMA has come under increasing scrutiny, particularly regarding its response efforts in western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. Critics have accused the agency of political bias and inefficiency.
On Jan. 24, after visiting disaster-affected regions, President Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for a thorough review of FEMA’s operations. The order cited reports suggesting that FEMA staff had been instructed to prioritize certain communities over others based on political affiliation. Trump also pointed out that the agency had allocated over a billion dollars to support undocumented immigrants instead of focusing on disaster relief.
“There are serious concerns about FEMA’s impartiality,” Trump stated. “It has diverted its resources away from its core mission, leaving Americans in need while prioritizing efforts beyond its authority.”
The executive order established a special council to assess FEMA’s efficiency and propose reforms. Trump also hinted at the possibility of restructuring or even dismantling FEMA to improve its effectiveness in disaster management.
Calls for Reform and Legal Challenges
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), formed to audit federal spending and improve budget management, has been at the center of controversy. Its investigations have led to legal pushback, with multiple attorneys general and labor unions filing lawsuits to block DOGE’s access to Treasury and Labor Department records.
Despite this, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who oversees FEMA, expressed support for a comprehensive review of the agency. In a recent interview, she suggested that FEMA’s current structure should be dismantled. “We still need funding and resources for disaster victims, but FEMA, as it stands today, is deeply flawed and must be reformed,” she said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
As of now, FEMA has not issued an official response to confirm or clarify the reported $59 million expenditure or address how the funds might be recovered.
