FLORIDA — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed two significant immigration bills into law: SB 2C and SB 4C. The laws aim to enhance the state’s role in immigration enforcement and align with federal initiatives.
Key provisions of the new legislation
● Establishment of the State Board of Immigration Enforcement: This board, chaired by the governor and comprising other state officials, is responsible for coordinating immigration enforcement activities with federal agencies and allocating funds to local law enforcement.
● Allocation of Funds for Enforcement: Nearly $300 million has been designated to support state and local authorities in detaining and transferring undocumented immigrants to federal custody.
● Enhanced Penalties for Crimes: The laws introduce stricter penalties for crimes committed by undocumented individuals, including the death penalty for those convicted of capital offenses such as first-degree murder or child rape.
● Repeal of In-State Tuition for Undocumented Students: The legislation eliminates in-state tuition rates for undocumented students attending Florida’s public colleges and universities.
●Prohibition of State-Issued Driver’s Licenses: The new laws prevent the state from issuing driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
These measures have been met with criticism from various organizations. The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida condemned the laws, stating they could instill fear in communities and potentially violate constitutional rights.
Governor DeSantis emphasized that these laws position Florida at the forefront of states addressing illegal immigration and supporting federal enforcement efforts.
“The bill I signed today makes Florida the strongest state in the nation for immigration enforcement. This legislation will enlist state and local law enforcement to assist the Trump Administration with re-establishing the rule of law, removing illegal aliens from our country, and protecting our communities. Florida is happy to lead, and I hope other states follow suit!” Said the Governor.
