WASHINGTON D.C. – Negotiations for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia came to an abrupt halt on Friday after a tense exchange between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The discord led to the cancellation of a scheduled press conference and the withdrawal of a proposed minerals deal, a White House official confirmed.

During their meeting, Trump accused Zelenskyy of displaying a lack of respect toward the United States and suggested that the Ukrainian leader was not prepared to pursue peace under U.S. mediation.

“I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post on Friday. “I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington had been expected to advance peace negotiations while also finalizing an agreement that would grant the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources in exchange for continued American support since Russia’s 2022 invasion. However, discussions soured as Trump and Vice President JD Vance chastised Zelenskyy for what they perceived as a lack of gratitude for U.S. assistance. They argued that his stance weakened Ukraine’s position at the negotiating table.

“You’re playing cards,” Trump said. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War III. And what you’re doing is very disrespectful to this country.”

When asked whether he believed Trump supported Ukraine, Zelenskyy reiterated that the United States stood with his country and underscored the urgency of halting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aggression. He also highlighted Europe’s critical role in aiding Ukraine—prompting Trump to interject, claiming that U.S. contributions far exceeded those from European nations. Zelenskyy pushed back against that assertion.

While exact figures vary based on classification, the Council on Foreign Relations reports that Congress has allocated approximately $175 billion in aid to Ukraine since 2022.

With tensions escalating, the future of peace negotiations remains uncertain.
