BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College softball team swept No. 7 Miami Dade College in a Citrus Conference doubleheader Tuesday evening.

The 22nd-ranked Titans won the first game 7-6 and the second game 5-3 to improve to 11-11 in the conference.

In Game 1 the Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Avery Velazquez doubled, scoring Aracelis Jimenez. Isabel Otero scored on a sacrifice fly by Madison Velazquez to make it 2-2.

Miami Dade scored runs in the second and third innings to tie the game 2-2. It stayed that way until the sixth inning, when the Titans scored three times, highlighted by a two-run single by Jessica Merk.

Up 5-2, they added two runs in the top of the seventh and needed them all, as Miami Dade scored four times to cut the lead to 7-6.

But Avery Velazquez shut the door for the win. Merk went 2-for-4 with three RBI while Martha Jones, Ashley Corazzini, Madison Velazquez and Jimenez all had two hits in the win.

Luci Walters was stellar in the second game, tossing five scoreless innings before allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings for her 10th win.

Emma George had an RBI single in the second inning to open the scoring for the Titans and would come up in the fourth inning and double down the right field line, scoring Kayla Fanning to make it 2-0.

Ashley Corazzini made it 3-0 in the fifth with an RBI single, and later in the inning, Merk ripped a two-run double to make it 5-0.

Miami Dade scored a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. They had the bases loaded with two outs, but Avery Velazquez got out of the jam for the save.

Isabel Otero, Merk, and George each had two hits in the game.

Eastern Florida State College will return to Titan Softball Complex on Thursday for an afternoon doubleheader against Santa Fe College. The first game will start at 2 p.m., and fans can watch the games live online at the EFSC Titans YouTube page.
