BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eau Gallie Commodores were defeated 7-6 in eight innings, forcing a Game 3 in the FHSAA State Regional Quarterfinals.
Eau Gallie will travel to Miami to face Belen Jesuit on Thursday, April 24, on the Wolverines’ home turf. The winner of Thursday’s contest will advance to face the Merritt Island Mustangs in the Regional Semifinals.
After Eau Gallie dominated Game 1 with an 8-3 victory, Belen Jesuit had other plans in Game 2.
The Wolverines struck first in the fourth inning when a bases-loaded walk brought home a run. It wouldn’t be long before the Commodores answered, as a two-run blast from Aiden McMahon gave them the lead in the fifth.
Eau Gallie added another run to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth to go up 3-1. However, in the top of the seventh, with their season on the line, Belen Jesuit’s David Del Pino sent a fastball over the fence to tie the game at 3-3. The Commodores couldn’t capitalize in the bottom half, sending the game into extra innings.
Junior Brock Lustic pitched through the seventh for the Commodores, striking out 10. Aiden McMahon took over on the mound to start the eighth. Riding the momentum of their game-tying home run, the Wolverines loaded the bases, and senior Amauri Gonzalez delivered a grand slam with a line drive over the wall.
Facing a four-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth, the Commodores rallied with two outs. Alex Jacobs ripped a line drive into the right-field gap, bringing in three runs. With runners in scoring position, Eau Gallie threatened to walk it off, but a deep drive to left was caught on the warning track to end the game.
Eau Gallie will now head to Miami for Game 3 against Belen Jesuit on Thursday, April 24. Merritt Island awaits the winner, having defeated Suncoast 2-0 in their series.
If the Commodores prevail on Thursday, they will face the Mustangs for the sixth—and potentially seventh—time this season.
