BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College men’s tennis team placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Florence, South Carolina on Friday.
Alberto Perez Mellado placed second at No. 2 singles at the national tournament, falling in the final 6-2, 6-2 against Barton Community College’s Victor Alves.
The No. 3 doubles team of Pablo Garcia Rodriguez and Tomas Kurz Cardozo were back on the court in the semifinals of the consolation bracket Friday. The duo faced Collin College’s Santiago Martinez and Luke Stula = and fell behind 0-3 and then 4-1 before making a run, scoring three of the next four points to cut the lead to 5-4. But that would be as close as they would get as Collin wrapped it up with three straight points to capture the 8-5 win.
Tyler Junior College won the national title for the second straight year as they beat second-place Barton by nine points. Collin was just a half of a point behind Barton and Pratt was a half point behind Collin in the final standings.
